Separation describes a change in the relationship; divorce is the legal ending of a marriage. A divorce enquiry can involve eligibility, application documents, service and the significance of the dates involved. These questions should be distinguished from resolving financial or parenting arrangements.

Do not assume that obtaining a divorce automatically distributes property or settles children’s arrangements. Tell the adviser about unfinished financial matters, overseas marriages or living arrangements that may affect the application. Ask which dates need individual assessment rather than calculating eligibility from a general guide.

Keep originals and dates intact. Use a short initial enquiry for a conflict and suitability check before sending sensitive documents.
Use the first review to identify the proposed divorce task and any parenting or financial questions still outstanding. Bring the marriage documents available to you and explain where each person lives. Ask the lawyer to distinguish an application, service arrangements and any extra evidence or attendance from the advertised preparation fee.
A document ending a marriage does not itself describe how every asset or parenting issue is settled. Keep separate questions visible rather than assuming they disappear when the divorce is finalised.
What does the divorce application resolve, and what connected matters need separate advice?
Ask the adviser to explain the assumptions behind the answer, any missing information and what would change the proposed next step. You can request an initial assessment without assuming that full representation is included.
Do not assume so. Ask whether the proposal covers only the divorce process or also advice and documents about property. Request a separate scope for each task and prompt advice about timing that could affect other steps.
