Property & Conveyancing

Property legal work spans transactions, occupation, shared ownership, building projects and land-use decisions. The property’s state or territory is usually a more useful starting point than the location of the person seeking advice. Identify whether you are deciding what to sign, carrying out an agreement or responding to a dispute.

General information only — not legal advice. This Australian overview is not a statement of every state or territory’s law. Check the jurisdiction and current requirements with an appropriately qualified adviser.

How these legal topics fit together

Conveyancing is not the same service as tenancy advice, a building-defects claim or a planning objection. Commercial leases, strata obligations and retirement-village contracts each raise their own questions. A conveyancer and a legal practitioner are different provider categories; permitted services vary by jurisdiction.

Prepare your enquiry

Provide the property location, the current document version and any known transaction or notice dates. Ask what must be assessed before the next decision. Confirm whether the proposed fee includes advice on unusual clauses, searches, negotiations or only the administration of a defined transaction.

Questions to define the work

  • What work needs doing before I commit?
  • Which searches, third-party expenses and unusual issues are excluded?
  • Who handles a dispute if one arises during the transaction?
