A criminal-law enquiry may arise before any charge, after receiving a notice or during an existing court case. Advice can concern the allegation, available information, procedural stage and representation required. The exact jurisdiction and documents are essential.

An allegation is not a finding of guilt. Advice about an investigation, a plea, a hearing and sentencing are different tasks. Ask the practitioner what is included and what needs urgent attention rather than treating an initial consultation as an agreement to conduct the entire case.
Organise the following material you already lawfully hold. This is a preparation list, not a complete evidentiary requirement. Ask the verified adviser what they need and how to send it securely.
Keep originals and dates intact. Use a short initial enquiry for a conflict and suitability check before sending sensitive documents.
Ask the office to identify the immediate stage and the first accepted task: advice about an interview, review of charges, preparation for an appearance or ongoing representation. Supply notices through an agreed secure channel. Clarify who will assess dates and who will personally handle the next event.
A consultation about possible representation is not confirmation that someone will attend court. Obtain an express answer about acceptance and scope rather than assuming the firm is acting because it has received your papers.
Which stage needs attention now, and does the engagement include representation at the next event?
Ask the adviser to explain the assumptions behind the answer, any missing information and what would change the proposed next step. You can request an initial assessment without assuming that full representation is included.
Ask which papers, conferences and evidence review are included, and what later work is excluded. Confirm whether another practitioner or barrister may be involved and how that would be arranged and charged.

Define the work before comparing the fee
The specific notice, charge or licence decision matters more than a broad search label. Tell the office about any appearance or response date and ask whether it can assess the immediate timing.
Mention connected issues when you enquire. One engagement may not cover every part of your situation.
