Free and Lower-Cost Legal Help in Queensland

Start with the service that fits the problem and the kind of help you need. Compare Legal Aid Queensland, community services and private-lawyer options without assuming that an enquiry guarantees eligibility or representation.

General information only — not legal advice or an eligibility assessment. Call 000 if there is immediate danger.

Start with the right QLD pathway

Queensland covers large metropolitan, regional and remote areas, so service coverage and meeting format matter. Legal Aid Queensland, community legal centres and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal services have their own intake rules. A telephone information service is not automatically an agreement to represent you.

02 · Community help

Community legal services

Search for a service covering Queensland, then read its intake and coverage details. A centre may focus on a region, legal topic or group of people, and current capacity may affect assistance.

Use the national community legal service finder ↗

03 · Private help

Compare a clearly defined service

Ask a private firm what the first fee includes, who will do the work and whether a limited first step is possible. Appearing here is not a recommendation or proof of suitability.

What to prepare before asking for help

Give the Queensland location of the event, property or court as well as where you live. Ask whether help can be provided remotely, whether travel is required and whether the service handles the precise type and stage of problem.

  • A short description in ordinary language, without unnecessary private details.
  • The exact name of any court, tribunal, regulator or agency.
  • Every known date, including the date you received a document.
  • The outcome you need from the first contact: information, advice, a task or representation.
  • Language, disability, safety or communication support you need.

Do not send original documents or sensitive material until the service explains how it accepts information and whether it can assess the enquiry. Keep a note of whom you contacted and the next step they described.

Questions about legal help in Queensland

Does Legal Aid Queensland provide a free lawyer for every legal problem?

No. Services, priorities, eligibility and available forms of assistance vary. Check Legal Aid Queensland's current information and ask what help is available for the issue, location and stage you describe.

What can a community legal service in Queensland do?

Services differ. A centre may provide information, advice, a legal task, referral, duty-lawyer assistance or representation, and may be limited by topic, location, eligibility and capacity. Confirm its current scope directly.

Does making an enquiry protect a legal deadline?

No. An enquiry, referral request or waitlist does not protect a deadline or establish representation. State every known date at the beginning and ask what timely step is available.

Can I still compare private lawyers in Queensland?

Yes. Compare relevant experience, the person doing the work, scope, fees, communication and current professional information. Ask whether a defined consultation or limited engagement is appropriate if cost is a concern.
